Short answer: yes. In England and Wales an independent celebrant cannot yet conduct a legally binding marriage, so you do the paperwork with the register office and the ceremony with me.
Step one: give notice
Both of you visit your local register office at least 29 days before the legal ceremony. Bring ID and proof of address. There is a fee per person.
Step two: the statutory ceremony
Book the shortest slot the register office offers. It’s often called a “statutory” or “2+2” ceremony: you, your partner and two witnesses. It takes ten minutes and costs around £62. Most couples do it a day or two before the real thing.
Step three: the ceremony everyone remembers
That’s the one I write. Your venue, your words, your people. Nobody will care which day the certificate was signed.
Is this changing?
The Government is reforming wedding law. A consultation ran in 2026. Humanist weddings will become legal; a route for independent celebrants is proposed but not yet defined. Plan for the two-step approach and treat anything sooner as a bonus.
