The

Legal Bit

In most of the UK, including England and Wales, you currently can't complete the legal paperwork with a celebrant. You can only legally get married in a licensed venue with a registrar or in a religious ceremony. Good news: celebrants are actively campaigning to change this.

The workaround

Short, basic, then you're free

To make your marriage legal in England and Wales, you need a separate, quick administrative ceremony, most commonly done at a register office. The same applies to civil partnerships.

This legal registration can be incredibly short and basic. You don't have to exchange rings, vows, or include any ritual if you don't want to. Once that quick legal bit is done, you're free.

Your celebrant ceremony then becomes your actual wedding. This is where you truly exchange your personal vows, tell your story, and celebrate without any restrictions on time, location, or content. Anything really does go.

Best of all, you can take care of the legal part simply and affordably. Currently you can legally register your marriage for less than £172, covering your notices, room hire and the marriage schedule.

Please note: the exact cost and process depend on your local council and its current fees. Check with your register office when you give notice.

Registrar

Conducts the legal marriage with a fixed civil script in a licensed room. No religious content, limited personalisation, and you get whoever is on duty.

Legally binding: yes

Humanist celebrant

Personal, non-religious ceremonies anywhere. Cannot include religious elements. Legal in Scotland and Northern Ireland; recognition in England and Wales is committed but not yet law.

Legally binding here: not yet

Is the law

Changing?

Yes, slowly. In October 2025 the Government announced the biggest reform of wedding law in England and Wales since the 1830s, moving regulation from where you marry to who conducts it. A consultation ran in 2026. Humanist weddings are set to become legal; a route for independent celebrants is proposed but not yet defined. Realistically nothing changes before 2028 or 2029, so plan for the two-step approach and treat anything sooner as a bonus.
