What happens at a naming ceremony?

A christening without the church: the running order, who does what, and ideas families love.

A naming ceremony usually lasts 20 to 30 minutes and is followed by a party. Here’s a typical running order.

  1. Welcome. Why everyone is here.
  2. The story so far. How this little person arrived and what they’re like.
  3. The name. What it means and why you chose it.
  4. Parents’ promises. Spoken out loud, in your own words.
  5. Guideparents. The grown-ups you’ve chosen to be in their corner, and their promises.
  6. A ritual. Planting a tree, a book of wishes, lighting a candle, a time capsule.
  7. Closing words and a certificate.
